The Benefits of Martial Arts for Children

Benefits of Martial arts for kids?

Childrens Martial arts in Heckmondwike – How can it help my child?

Young girl doing a martial arts kick. After almost 30 years of Martial Arts training and and now teaching Childrens Martial arts in Heckmondwike, I often hear lots of statements and questions from parents, such as:

  • “My child has anger management issues, why should he learn to fight?”
  • “My child doesn’t have enough confidence to learn Martial Arts”
  • “My child isn’t sporty enough to do Martial Arts”
  • “My Child has ADHD and can’t concentrate enough to learn Martial Arts”

The list could go on and on, but the simple fact is that Martial arts is not “leaning to fight” and you do not need to be fit enough, flexible enough, or sporty enough to START training. Waiting until ready enough before starting, is like not going to school until you are smart enough. That’s the whole reason you are there… learn!

So, what can Childrens Martial arts in Heckmondwike do for you and your child? (That’s right, it’s not just children that can benefit.) Well, given that there are many different styles of Martial Arts around to learn, there will no doubt be different benefits that come from each one, but ALL Martial arts will have the same core principles at their root. I myself have trained in Taekwon-Do (29 Years), Kickboxing (8 Years), Thai Boxing, Jiu Jitsu and Aikido in the past, with Taekwon-Do being what I currently teach at Chuldow Martial Arts Heckmondwike, so I shall focus on the benefits of this particular Art.

There are, of course, the obvious benefits to training in Taekwon-Do here at Chuldow Martial Arts Heckmondwike, such as improved general fitness, strenth, flexibility & confidence as well as learning self defence and most importantly, having fun!

However, Taekwon-Do has 5 Tenets which are recited at the begginging of every class, along with the Student Oath. This is what we aim to follow, and can give us a look at the other benefits of training in Taekwon-Do. Lets take a look at them below.

Man Holding out his handCourtesy

We teach students to be courteous to everyone. This mean saying please and thank you. Saying hello and shaking hands when meeting someone. To respect other peoples opinions and possesions. To help others when needed.

This is something that, at times, seems to be largely missing from society lately, and is a core principle of any Martial Art I have trained in.

Road sigh saying Right & WrongIntegrity

Having integrity is to be honest, to know right from wrong, have a conscience and admit when you are wrong. Own up to mistakes, because we all make them. It’s also just as important to be honest with yourself, as well as with others. If you are not honest with yourself, you will find it hard to learn and progress, as you will not see where you are going wrong.

Chalk board saying don't give upPerseverence

Your Martial Arts journey is not going to be easy, it takes hard work and commitment. You will find some things more difficuilt than others, but sticking with it will bring many great rewards. Remember, “a Black belt is simply a white belt that never gave up!”.

Fist hitting a tabletopSelf Control

Self control if extremely important, not only IN class but also OUTSIDE of it. As a martial artist you are repressenting your club where ever you go, but self control is just as important for yourself.

IN class it is important to use self control, for health & Safety reasons. When sparring, (Free sparring or Step Sparring), or performing techniques in class,  you should use control so that you don’t harm your fellow students.

OUT of class you should excersie self control over your emotions. Letting your emotions boil over will affect the way you think and act, and could cause you to do things you may regret later. Being able to control your emotions will give you the ability to think clearer and make better descions both in your personal life and even in your work life.

Indomitable spirit can often be mistaken for being the same as Perseverence and whilst it can have a similar meaning, indomitable spirit is more about pushing through despite the odds being against you. You should accept your failures with honesty, and strive to achieve your goals with modesty, despite any odds that are against you.

Student Oath

We follow the Tenets of Taekwon-Do with the student oath whic goes as follows:

“I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do

I Shall respect my instructor and seniors

I shall never mis-use Takewon-Do

I shall be a champion of freedom and justice

I shall help to build a more peacful world.”

If these are principles that you or your child would like to learn, then why not get in touch and book a free trial either by calling 01924 763753, emailing or by booking online here.
